MOSCOW, October 21 - RAPSI. The jury returned a verdict of guilty on Thursday night against Aslan Cherkesov charged with premeditated murder of football fan Yegor Sviridov and deserving no leniency. Further, all six defendants were found guilty of hooliganism and causing light injuries.
Sviridov was shot dead on the night of December 6, 2010 in the center of Moscow. The murder sparked a public outcry. Moscow youth were furious with a later police decision to release several suspects. The incident caused mass riots in central Moscow in late December.
It took the jury about four hours to deliver a verdict.
The court has scheduled October 25 for discussing the verdict's legal effects. On the same day the prosecutor's office will announce the punishment it deems appropriate for the defendants. Cherkesov is facing from six-year to life imprisonment.
The Cherkesov's defense is determined to seek the case review on the basis of the alleged violations in compiling a list of questions for the jury.
