MEXICO CITY, August 1 - RAPSI. The Ecuadorian police have detained Russian citizen Grigory Basalygin, who is wanted by Interpol, Ecuadorian Deputy Interior Minister Javier Cordoba said on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old Russian was arrested at the Port of Guayaquil. He was placed on the international wanted list in 2010. According to the Ecuadorian authorities, he arrived in the country in 2006, he then flew to Italy in October 2007, and a month later he returned to Ecuador from Spain.

Cordoba said that Basalygin is suspected of having ties with criminals and participating in a number of crimes committed in Russia, including drugs trafficking. The Ecuadorian media have reported that he tried to escape during the arrest.

The Ecuadorian authorities are currently preparing to extradite him.
