MOSCOW, June 20 (RAPSI) – Barcelona FC forward Lionel Messi and his father have been summoned by a Spanish court for questioning connected with tax fraud allegations, The Guardian reported Thursday.

The two have reportedly been asked to appear on September 17 as part of an investigation to determine whether the men should be charged.

On June 12, prosecutor Raquel Amado had lodged a complaint asserting that Messi and his father had failed to correctly pay taxes on revenues earned between 2007 and 2009.

Messi issued a statement via his Facebook page on June 12 explaining, “We have just known through the media about the claim filed by the Spanish tax authorities. We are surprised about those news, because we have never committed any infringement. We have always fulfilled all our tax obligations, following the advices of our Tax Consultants who will take care of clarifying this situation.”

According to RAPSI’s sister agency R-Sport, Messi joined Barcelona at the age of 13 and made his debut in the main squad three years later.

While playing for Barcelona, he has won 19 club trophies and four consecutive Ballon d'Or awards. In February, he extended his contract with Barcelona through 2018.
