MOSCOW, January 24 (RAPSI) – Apple’s Russian distribution arm, Apple Rus, is suing the customs agency over import duties on the iMac all-in-one computer, Izvestia newspaper writes on Friday.
Apple Rus has filed a claim with the Moscow Region Commercial Court against the Sheremetyevo customs’ decision to introduce a 6% duty. An Izvestia source with inside knowledge about the conflict said Apple Rus did not pay any duty on imported iMac all-in-one computers until the fall of 2013. It declared the goods under the customs code 8471 49, which denotes industrial equipment necessary for knowledge-based economic development.
The newspaper writes that several months ago the customs agency reregistered iMac under the category of all-in-one computers and laptops, which stipulates a customs duty of 6% of the customs value.
Apple Inc. is the world’s richest company with capitalization of $491 billion as of January 23. Its Russian arm Apple Rus, which it established in late 2011, is owned by Netherlands-based Apple Holding B.V. (99.5%) and Apple Distribution International (0.5%). Apple Rus mostly deals with wholesale imports.
Apple launched the Russian Apple Online Store in June 2013.
According to Gartner, an information technology research and advisory company, in mid-2013 Apple held 3% of the shrinking Russian PC market, which is dominated by HP (12%) and Lenovo (10%).
