MOSCOW, April 21 (RAPSI) - Two of the Carberp group hackers who developed one of the world’s largest botnets and stole money remotely from computers in Russia and Ukraine, have been convicted in Moscow, the Russian Interior Ministry announced today.

The ministry revealed that in 2011, two brothers living in Moscow started a criminal group. “They used malicious software to receive full access to personal computers in many organizations that had the Bank Client system installed.”

They accessed the computers of their victims and transferred money from their accounts to other accounts. The stolen money was then deposited in bank accounts opened with false IDs and then cashed. The criminal group was caught in March 2012.

The Interior Ministry reports that the two convicts have been sentenced to five to eight years in prison. Earlier this year, two other members of the group were tried and two more were put on the international wanted list.

Digit.ru previously reported that Carberp was one of the first cyber criminal groups to use malware for the mass infection of remote banking systems. Experts evaluated the damage caused in billions of rubles. Although many of the Carberp members were arrested in the summer 2012, the malicious software continues to be active, especially in Russia and Ukraine.
