MOSCOW, July 31 (RAPSI) – The defense lawyer for Russian national Roman Seleznev, who was arrested on charges of cyber fraud, says federal attorneys failed to prove they have arrested the right man, RIA Novosti announced.

He said that Roman is a popular first name and Seleznev is a widespread family name in Russia, while the absence of a patronymic in the case documents prevented the attorneys from identifying the arrested man without a shade of doubt.

Seleznev’s defense lawyer, Ely Goldin, submitted to the court a 34-page printout of the profiles of 162 men called Roman Seleznev from the popular Russian social media network, Odnoklassniki. The man’s defense team also hired a translator to explain the notion of the patronymic in Russia. They argue that using only first name and family name in official documents is inappropriate.

The court has dismissed the defense lawyers’ motion to release their client.

Moscow-born Roman Seleznev, 30, the son of Liberal Democratic Party State Duma deputy Valery Seleznev, has been charged with hacking into retail cash register systems to install malicious software to steal credit card numbers and with operating servers and international carding forum websites to facilitate the theft and sale of stolen credit card data. He was arrested on the Maldive Islands and taken to Guam, an unincorporated US territory in the western Pacific.

His father, lawmaker Valery Seleznev, is worried that Roman, who received a serious brain injury after a terrorist attack in Morocco in 2011, could die in custody if denied medical care.
