MOSCOW, June 26 (RAPSI) - A citizen of Russia and Lithuania, Jevgenijus Mataitis who has been earlier detained by a Moscow court, pleaded guilty to collecting data about the Russian Armed Forces for Lithuanian security forces, the Russian Federal Security Service’s Center of Public Relations reported on Friday.

According to the FSB, Mataitis, upon instructions from the Second Department of Operations of Lithuania’s Minister of Defense (military intelligence and counter-intelligence) purposefully collected military data about the Russian Armed Forces. If leaked abroad, this data could seriously damage Russia’s defense potential.

A permanent resident of Lithuania, Mataitis was arrested on June 24 by the FSB in Sovetsk, Kaliningrad Region, on suspicion of treason (Article 275 of the Russian Criminal Code). FSB investigators opened a criminal case against Mataitis. The investigation is in progress.

The Lefortovsky District Court of Moscow ordered the detention of Mataitis for two months, until August 24.

Lithuania’s Minister of Defense refused to comment on Mataitis’ confession, RIA Novosti reported on Friday citing spokesperson Asta Galdikaitė.
