MOSCOW, April 4 (RAPSI) – A court in the Republic of Kalmykia has ordered the detention of a Dagestani citizen, who allegedly desecrated a Buddha Statue, for two months, RIA Novosti reported on Monday citing Tamara Tepkenkieva, representative for the local prosecutor’s office.

A criminal case has been opened under an article of the Criminal Code on violation of right to freedom of conscience and religion. The case investigation is controlled by the republic’s prosecutor, Tepkenkieva said.

According to the republic’s authorities, the incident took place on the night of April 1 in Elista, the capital of Kalmykia. A native of Dagestan, who had come to Kalmykia for participation in the Russian National Freestyle Wrestling Championship, entered a Buddhist temple along with his friends and desecrated the shrine.
