MOSCOW, May 12 (RAPSI) – The Prosecutor General’s Office seeks extradition of the ex-head of the Far Eastern Center of Shipbuilding Igor Borbot, who was earlier arrested in the United States, Kommersant newspaper reports on Thursday.

Several criminal cases were launched in Russia over the embezzlement of more than 4 billion rubles ($60.6 mln) during the construction of the “Star” shipbuilding complex. Borbot and some of his former colleagues left the country and were put on the international wanted list with Borbot himself being sought by the Interpol, Kommersant informs.

According to Kommersant, on Wednesday the United States authorities notified their Russian counterparts about Borbot’s arrest for violation of the US immigration legislation.

As a rule, arrests conducted in accordance with the Interpol international orders should be followed by extraditions. However, there is no extradition agreement between Russian Federation and the United States, what complicates matters. Nevertheless, a Russian-American working group for resolving the legal issues agreed that persons on the wanted list may be extradited to Russia, if they are staying in the United States illegally, Kommersant writes.

In November 2013, the Prosecutor General’s Office announced that it unveiled a large-scale fraud related to ship repairs carried out at the “Star” shipbuilding complex. Later, ex-head of the complex Yuriy Shulgan was found guilty of embezzling 29 million rubles ($439,300), fined 550,000 rubles ($8,300), and was sentenced to three years on parole.
