MOSCOW, November 24 (RAPSI) – Alexey Serenko, a resident of Aksay town in southern Russia, who spent two years in jail after being charged with killing a family, seeks 10 million rubles ($156,000) in compensation for unlawful prosecution, Kommersant newspaper reported on Thursday.

On September 24, 2009, Serenko was arrested on suspicion of murdering lieutenant colonel Dmitry Chudakov, his wife Irina Chudakova and their two young children. The family was killed at the Don highway in the Aksay District of Rostov Region in the summer of 2009. Later Serenko was charged with three other murders and one attempted murder, according to Kommersant.

Serenko claims that he was subjected to physical abuse in detention in order to make him confess to killings while his relatives and friends received threats, according to Kommersant.

The case against him was sent in 2011 on further investigation. Soon after Sirenko was released from detention on the pledge not to leave town. Charges against him were dropped on November 4, 2013.

Two criminal cases were opened over abuse of authority, and Serenko appeared to be a victim.

The Prosecutor General’s Office apologized to Serenko in February 2014 for four years of unlawful prosecution, Kommersant reported.

He seeks to recover 6 million rubles ($90,500) for his stay in detention in 2009-2011 and 4 million rubles ($62,500) for staying under pledge not to leave town in 2011-2013.
