MOSCOW, May 2 (RAPSI) – The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) on Tuesday awarded €95,000 in compensation to three Russian nationals, who had complained of ill-treatment by police.

The court also ordered Russia to pay applicants €3,200 in respect of costs and expenses.

ECHR held that Russian authorities had violated Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights that prohibits torture and "inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment."

Complaints were filed with the Strasbourg court between 2009 and 2014. Applicants insisted that “after their arrest on suspicion of having committed crimes, they had been subjected to ill-treatment by the police in order to force them to confess to the crimes and that no effective investigation into their complaints had been carried out,” according to court papers.

Seven ECHR judges, who were considering applications, anonymously found violations and recognized actions of Russian authorities as tortures.
