MOSCOW, February 5 (RAPSI) – The Russian Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to mitigate a 16-year prison sentence of Islam Gugov, who had participated in terrorist activity in Syria, the court’s press service told RAPSI.

The sentence therefore became effective.

According to case papers, in October 2014, Gugov underwent training in a Syrian terrorist camp. Following that, he voluntary joined Imarat Kavkaz, the international terrorist organization banned in Russia, and participated in its activity.

From January to February 2015, he completed training in another terrorist camp in Syria’s largest city Aleppo and continued taking his part in Imarat Kavkaz.

In early May 2015, Gugov left the terrorist organization’s base.  He was arrested on March 13, 2016 on arrival to Russia’s Nalchik, the capital of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic.
