Ivanov was born on July 6, 1965 in Gatchina in Leningrad Region.
In 1987, he graduated from Leningrad (currently, St. Petersburg) State University’s Law Department with a major in jurisprudence.
In 1990, he completed postgraduate studies at St. Petersburg State University.
In 1991, Ivanov defended his dissertation on Property Rights and Commodity-Money Relations.
After graduating from the university, he worked as a teaching assistant at St. Petersburg State University’s Civil Law Department. He then joined the Pravovedenie magazine.
In 1995, he resigned from the magazine to resume his teaching career.
In 1995, he worked as the Legal Department head at Soyuzkontrakt-Uslugi.
In 1997-1999, Ivanov served as the head of St. Petersburg’s Justice Department.
In 1999-2003, he worked as an associate professor at St. Petersburg State University's Civil Law Department.
In July 2004, he was offered the first deputy managing director’s job at Gazprom-Media, where he worked until being appointed chairman of the Supreme Commercial Court.
In January 2005, Ivanov was appointed chairman of the Supreme Commercial Court by decision of the upper house of parliament.
He has been involved in scholarly work since 1987 and is the author of 40 publications. He is also a coauthor of a civil law textbook, which received a Russian governmental award in the field of education in 2001.
Ivanov is a member of the Presidential Council for Codification and Improvement of Civil Legislation. He is also involved in the development of the draft law on mineral resources for the Strategic Research Center.
Ivanov holds the highest judicial rank and is a Distinguished Lawyer of Russia.
