MOSCOW, June 6 - RAPSI. On Wednesday, the Federation Council adopted a government law allowing the courts to consider cases on violations committed during past election campaigns.

The current Civil Procedural Code stipulates a concrete period of time in which the courts can consider cases regarding the protection of voting rights which were filed during the election campaign.

Cases filed more than one day before the election must be considered and resolved within five days, but no later than the day preceding the elections. Any case submitted on the day preceding the elections, on election day itself, or the day after, must be considered immediately.

In 2005, the Constitutional Court found these provisions do not correspond to the constitution, as they prevent the court from resolving the case after the term of expiry, and are grounds for ceasing case proceedings.

This new law increases the level of judicial protection as guaranteed by the constitution of every citizens voting rights, the explanatory note reads.
