MOSCOW, May 18 (RAPSI) - Sergei Neverov and Irina Yarovaya, members of Russia's lower house of parliament, the State Duma, proposed stripping legislators of political power for failure to report their income, RIA Novosti reported on Monday.

According to the law, lawmakers and members of the Federation Council must file declarations on their income, expenses, property and property obligations as well as similar declarations for their spouses and minor children by April 1. However, there is no liability for failing to submit the reports in a timely manner or for complying with the law at all.

The parliament members propose introducing an obligation to provide the information and the early termination of a member’s mandate for failure to do so. The notes attached to the bill state that there is a similar responsibility for opening accounts (deposits) or depositing cash or valuables in foreign banks outside Russia, and for owning and/or using foreign financial tools.

According to the notes to the bill, the liability would fully correspond with the state anti-corruption policy. Since the parliament members and members of the Federation Council are involved in public service and represent the interests of the public, special status and authority can only be granted to individuals not involved in corrupt activity.

According to the parliament members, non-compliance with the anti-corruption laws must be regarded as grounds for dismissal from an official post.
