MOSCOW, August 18 (RAPSI) - Liberal Democratic Party members have submitted a bill to the State Duma that prohibits the trade of banned products, according to the lower house of parliament database.

The bill’s authors refer to law enforcement practices under which cases of banned products have been distributed since the embargo was introduced.

“Distributors argue that the products are banned from import but technically not from sales in Russia. Several court decisions have dismissed distributors from legal liability,” the bill’s authors state.

The parliament members insist these actions are not in keeping with current foreign policy and require additional legislative restrictions.

In August 2014, Russia restricted imports of food products from the countries that had imposed sanctions against it, including the US, the EU, Canada, Australia and Norway. Among the banned products are meat, sausage, fish and seafood, vegetables, fruit and dairy.

In June 2015, in response to extended sanctions, Russia extended its food embargo for an additional year, until August 5, 2016. Last week, Russia expanded its embargo to include Albania, Montenegro, Iceland, Lichtenstein and Ukraine. The ban regarding Ukraine is suspended and will only come into effect if Kiev adopts the economic sections in the EU association agreement.
