MOSCOW, September 23 (RAPSI) - Liberal Democratic Party member Margarita Svergunova has submitted a bill to the State Duma that would ban the use of palm oil, GMO and certain E food additives in food products, RIA Novosti reports on Tuesday.

The amendments would be made to the law On Food Quality and Safety.

“It is proposed that palm oil, genetically modified organisms and certain food additives be banned from use in food products as they are dangerous for health and can lead to cancer and cardiovascular diseases, digestion problems and allergies,” the explanatory note to the bill states.

The author of the bill notes that most of the specified food additives are banned in developed countries but are “criminally permitted” for use in Russia.

“Currently, only few substances are banned from use in food production by government regulations while the majority of harmful and even toxic substances are allowed,” the parliament member says.
