MOSCOW, November 2 - RAPSI. Members of Russia's Civic Chamber, a state-appointed consultative body that advises the government on civic issues, will observe the U.S. presidential elections. They will act as foreign observers for the first time ever, Alexander Sokolov, the head of the Civic Chamber Inter-Commission Working Group on International Cooperation and Public Diplomacy, said on Friday.
The presidential elections will be held in the U.S. on November 6. Democratic candidate, President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney will run in the elections.
"On November 4, the delegation of four people will leave for the United States," Sokolov said. "Georgy Fedorov and Maxim Grigoryev, the co-chairmen of the Civic Chamber Working Group on Public Control Over the Election Process, chamber member Andrey Dementyev, and I will head to the United States."
He said representatives of international organizations have previously monitored the U.S. presidential campaign.
"For the first time, we are going to the elections as representatives of the Russian public structure," he said. "We have an invitation from the State Department. The visit is also unique because it has been authorized by the U.S. authorities."
The trip will be financed by the chamber's budget for international cooperation. Russian diplomatic representative offices in the United States will provide assistance to the delegation members.
