MOSCOW, August 8 (RIA Novosti) – Three men have been detained in the Russian city of Novosibirsk for killing a local businessman by beating him up and forcing him to drink a fatal amount of alcohol, police said Thursday.

A business rival ordered the January 30 murder of Yakov Khanin, 68, as part of a dispute over downtown offices in the Siberian city, according to a local police website statement.

“The missing man was found at the gates of a large garage with his face covered with abrasions,” according to the police statement. “The victim’s death was caused by alcohol poisoning – analysis of his blood showed he had a [blood alcohol level] of more than 6 per mil [0.6 percent].”

Police said the business rival, whom they did not identify, hired two assassins to carry out the killing. “This man hired two hit men for 50,000 rubles ($1,516), who kidnapped the businessman and took him to a garage where they forced him to consume a deadly dose of alcohol,” according to police. The killers were detained in late July, and the man who ordered the murder detained in early August as he was preparing to leave Russia, police said.

Yakov Khanin was a prominent member of the local Jewish community and owned commercial property in Novosibirsk, as well as gold mining businesses in northern Kazakhstan, according to local media reports.
