MOSCOW, October 7 (RAPSI) - Residents of a Connecticut town scarred by a school shooting that claimed the lives of 20 small children and six adults in December voted over the weekend in favor of the demolition of Sandy Hook Elementary School, local news outlet The Newtown Bee reported Saturday.

The Newtown Bee reported that 5,062 ballots were cast in Saturday’s referendum, 4,504 of which voted to support the funding for the school’s demolition and reconstruction.

According to the news outlet, the Connecticut State Bond Commission approved a $49.25 million appropriation in September that would provide for the destruction of Sandy Hook Elementary School and the reconstruction of its successor.

20-year-old Adam Lanza opened fire on students and teachers in a small town Connecticut elementary school on December 14, killing 20 children and six adults. His mother’s body was discovered in her Newton, Connecticut home, and Lanza apparently died by his own hand on the scene, bringing the death toll up to 28.
