MOSCOW, April 24 (RAPSI) – Russia’s Presidential Council for Human Rights has asked Council of Europe Commissioner Dunja Mijatović to intervene in the case of Yelena Odnovol, an activist of the Volunteers of Victory movement, who was arrested in Ukraine, the advisory body’s website reads.

According to preliminary information, Odnovol is charged with treason, subversive activities, causing damage to Ukraine’s sovereignty and its territorial integrity. The Council notes that these charges are related to how Ukrainian authorities view Odnovol’s activity. Yelena’s volunteering activism has always been public with its goals being charity, peacekeeping, resolution of contradictions, reconciliation within the society and preservation of historical memory, the Council writes.

It was noted that relatives and colleagues of the activist are still not able to contact her and worried of her fate. As such the Council asks Mijatović to take control over the situation and ask the Ukrainian authorities to immediately release her and uphold her rights.

On Monday, Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Yury Lutsenko stated that the activist was arrested. According to Lutsenko, Odnovol aided Russia and Russian NGO in conducting subversive activity against Ukraine.
