MOSCOW, June 20 (RAPSI, Diana Gutsul) – The Investigative Committee and the Federal Security Service (FSB) searched the apartment of opposition leader Alexei Navalny on Friday morning, confiscating a painting presented to him by supporters, lawyer Vadim Kobzev told RIA Novosti.

“The search, which began at 4 a.m., was held within the framework of a case on embezzlement from the Union of Right Forces. Ultimately, they confiscated a painting made by a Russian street artist, which Navalny’s supporters presented to him,” the lawyer said. “We’ll know the reason for this [search] next week.”

According to investigators, a company headed by Navalny is implicated in the embezzlement of about 100 million rubles (about $3 million), which were allocated to the neoliberal political party, the Union of Right Forces, several years ago.

Alexei Navalny is an opposition politician and public leader and head of the Party of Progress. He participated in the 2013 mayoral elections in Moscow and runs one of the most popular sociopolitical blogs, which was put on the list of prohibited sources after allegedly encouraging people to participate in unauthorized public events.

Navalny was also implicated in several criminal cases. Currently, he is on house arrest under an embezzlement case at Yves Rocher Vostok, the company’s East Europe subsidiary that sued Alexei Navalny and his brother for fraud and money laundering.

Navalny denies the charges and says the allegations are politically motivated.
