The Navalny brothers sentenced in Yves Rocher case
Opposition activist Alexei Navalny received suspended sentence of 3.5 years in the Yves Rocher embezzlement case. His brother Oleg sentenced to 3.5 years in prison.
Opposition activist and anti-corruptrion blogger Alexei Navalny (left) on Tuesday, December 30 recieved suspended sentence of 3.5 years in the Yves Rocher embezzlement case.
Alexei's brother Oleg (left) was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison and fined 500,000 rubles (about $8,600). He was was detained by court bailiffs after the sentencing, to prepare processing for a general security prison.
The Navalny brothers stood accused in a fraud case involving embezzlement of up to 26 million rubles (about $457,700) from cosmetics company Yves Rocher Vostok.
Oleg Navalny was accused of having "manipulated" Yves Rocher into entering into a contractual agreement for cargo mail transportation with a company registered in his brother's name, while holding senior position with Russia's Postal Service.
Alexei Navalny is a Russian political and public figure, leader of the Party of Progress. After rising to fame with the opposition minded Russians by his anti-corruption crusade on the Internet, he ran for Moscow mayor and was involved in several criminal cases. He spent the last several months of 2014 under house arrest. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges and said he has been persecuted for political reasons.
