MOSCOW, November 18 - RAPSI. The patent regulator has denied Baltika Breweries the "Zatecky Gus" trademark registration, according to the regulator's records.
The decision upholds the service's April 8 resolution to the same effect.
The decision reads that the trademark contains the word "Zatecky," which is an adjective derived from "Zatec," a Czech city with a 1,000-year history that has been a beer brewing center for several centuries. In this context, the regulator concluded that the trademark cannot be registered in the name of a Russian producer as that would mislead consumers about the origin of their goods.
Baltika maintains that its reputation would prevent anyone from being misled about the origin of its products or their manufacturer's location.
Baltika is Russia's beer market leader with a 39.4-percent share of the market and a major European brewery. Baltika beer is the number-one beer in Europe in terms of sales.
