MOSCOW, June 20 - RAPSI. The judgment sentencing retired Russian colonel convicted of spying for US becomes final.
“Neither Mikhailov, nor his attorney has contested the judgment and it has entered into force,” the court said.
Retired Federal Security Service (FSB) colonel Valery Mikhailov was found guilty of treason on June 6.
Under the Criminal Code, high treason is defined as espionage committed by a Russian citizen for a foreign state, disclosing state secrets, or providing other assistance detrimental to national security.
Investigators maintain that he contacted CIA agents in Moscow during his service at the FSB and delivered secret information to U.S. intelligence officers.
In addition to the custodial punishment, Mikhailov was fined 500,000 rubles ($15,370), ordered to confiscate his property in Ukraine. Mikhailov was also deprived of his military rank and some awards.
