KAZAN, July 24 - RAPSI. On Monday, Kazan's Vakhitovsky District Court arrested Rustam Kashapov, resident of Tatarstan, on suspicion of taking part in the assassination attempt of Mufti of Tatarstan Ildus Fayzov and in assassinating head of the Spiritual Muslim Board of Tatarstan Valiulla Yakupov, the court's press secretary Yelena Koval told RIA Novosti.
The court ordered Kashapov to be held until September 19, 2012, Koval said.
On Thursday morning, a car exploded in Kazan and injured Mufti of Tatarstan Ildus Fayzov. On the same day, the head of the Spiritual Muslim Board of Tatarstan, Valiulla Yakupov, was shot dead by his home. Two cases in attempted murder and murder have been initiated and consolidated into a single proceeding.
Investigators have classed the case as an act of terrorism.
The court previously arrested five suspects. Vladimir Markin, the spokesperson for the Investigative Committee, said earlier that the primary motive for both crimes was the victims' professional activity and their ideological disputes with their opponents.
