KIEV, August 10 - RAPSI. The Prosecutor's Office filed a motion in a Kiev court to sentence former Ukrainian foreign minister, Yuri Lutsenko, to 30 months in prison in the second case against him, RIA Novosti reported on Friday.
In Lutsenko's first case, on February 27, the Pechorsky District Court in Kiev sentenced Lutsenko to four years in prison for embezzlement of state property and abuse of office. The appeals court upheld the judgment in full.
This second criminal case against Lutsenko is based on accusations of illegal eavesdropping and spying on the driver of former First Deputy Chief of Ukrainian Security Service Vladimir Satsyuk. The matter is being considered as part of former President Viktor Yushchenko's poisoning case. The former minister claims his innocence and says he is being prosecuted because of political motives.
On Friday, the state prosecutor said that since Lutsenko had already been sentenced to four years in prison that the possible sentence in the second trial would run concurrently. In Ukraine, if an individual is convicted in more than one trial, only the longer of the terms will be served.
