MOSCOW, September 27 - RAPSI. Russia's largest social networking service VKontakte has removed the notorious Innocence of Muslims film from its website and left only videos that talk about the Innocence of Muslims, according to the website search results.

“Saw the scandalous Innocence of Muslims. A poor, small-budget film with little to discuss. Deleted it. Come on! Make quality anti-Muslin cinema!” VKontakte head Pavel Durov wrote on his Twitter page.

Last week the St Petersburg Prosecutor’s Office warned the website that the video could constitute a violation of the law on combating extremist activities.

VKontakte told RIA Novosti that they would not remove the video before the court rules on it.

The Tverskoy District Court in Moscow will hear a complaint to recognize the film as extremist on October 1.

When a trailer for the low-budget video, which denigrates the Muslim Prophet Mohamed, was aired on Egyptian television earlier this month a wave of protests broke out around the Middle East and North Africa.

The strongest protests were seen in Egypt and Yemen, although rallies have also been held in Sudan, Tunisia, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. In the Libyan city of Benghazi, heavily armed radical protesters stormed the U.S. Consulate and killed four, including US Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens.

The Russian Prosecutor General's Office has appealed to the court to declare the film extremist. The federal communications agency has called on Internet operators to block access to the film even before the court rules on it.

The United States is strengthening the security of its diplomatic staff in countries where they may be subject to attack, while a number of Eastern countries have blocked access to the film. At the same time, Google has denied requests to completely remove clips of the film from its video-hosting sections.
