MOSCOW, September 28 - RAPSI. The relatives of Denis Telyakov, a student who was beaten in Canada, are determined to file three lawsuits in a Canadian court, his sister Yelena Romanova told RIA Novosti on Thursday.
According to the Foreign Ministry, Telyakov went to Canada to study English where he was unlawfully detained by the police in Calgary. He was then placed in an investigative isolation ward where he was severely beaten by his cellmates.
The incident took place on August 20. Telyakov was later hospitalized and fell into a coma. The Canadian authorities did not duly inform the consular institutions of the beating. Furthermore, the charges brought against Telyakov were found to be insolvent and rescinded, the Foreign Ministry said.
"I am meeting with the lawyers today. We will file three lawsuits, one of which will be a lawsuit filed by a victim of a crime under the Canadian program and set the compensation amount," his sister said.
She added that the two other lawsuits will be filed against the investigative institution where her brother was kept and against the school where he studied. Romanova said her brother is presently in a neurology ward.
She added that the insurance company that provided Telyakov with tourism insurance refuses to pay for his treatment.
"They say they want him sent for rehabilitation to Russia and they are looking for a clinic that will accept him. But not all the clinics we found are private. And simply we have no money to pay for his treatment," she said.
Earlier, the Foreign Ministry demanded that Canada investigate the incident, punish the guilty parties and resolve compensation issues for Telyakov, who will require substantial future treatment.
