NEW DELHI, November 19 - RAPSI. Five Russians have been detained in Sri Lanka on counts of credit card fraud, Sri Lankan police reported on Sunday.

According to investigators, the detained individuals conducted illegal operations together with accomplices in Cambodia and Vietnam, China's Xinhua news agency reported.

The police reported that a group of Russians was arrested in Colombo. It was previously said that during the arrest of the suspects, various equipment was confiscated, including laptops allegedly used for fraudulent credit card transactions. In addition, the police claim that the suspects had over $25,000 on them which had been withdrawn from a local ATM.

Criminal Investigations Division (CID) spokesman Priyashantha Jayakod said that the Sri Lankan police took 250 fake credit cards from the arrested Russians.

The Russian embassy in Sri Lanka is looking into the information on the detained Russians.

"The embassy has not received any official information from the police on the arrest of Russian citizens.

Nevertheless, the information reported by the media is being checked," a spokesperson from the Russian embassy in Sri Lanka told RIA Novosti.
