VORONEZH, February 5 - RAPSI, Alexei Andreyev. A resident of Voronezh in southern Russia has repaid his debt with eight bags of coins ranging from 5 kopecks to 2 rubles, the Voronezh Region's department of Bailiff Service reported on Tuesday.
The man was court-ordered to compensate legal fees to another citizen.
The department received court instructions to collect 5,000 rubles ($167) from a 45-year-old man. The man subsequently showed up at the department in early February with eight bags of 5 and 50 kopeck pieces and 1 and 2 ruble coins. The bailiffs had to go to a nearby bank to count the coins on a special device. The procedure lasted 40 minutes.
A spokesman for the department told RIA Novosti that the man had repaid his debt in full and the case against him had been closed.
This is not the first joke of this kind in the news recently. Last summer, a court ruled that South Korea's Samsung Electronics must pay a fine of $1 billion to US Apple for patent infringement. The media reported that Samsung allegedly sent "over 30 trucks to Apple's headquarters loaded with nickels [5-cent pieces]." However, it turned out later that the story was a hoax.
