MOSCOW, November 10 (RAPSI) - Chelyabinsk Electrometallurgical Plant OAO (ChEMK), the largest producer of ferroalloys in Russia, has filed a suit with the European Court of Justice over sanctions imposed on it earlier, Izvestia newspaper reported on Monday.

In April 2014, the European Commission imposed a definitive anti-dumping duty on imports of ferrosilicon, an essential alloy in the production of steel and cast iron, made in China and Russia for five years. This alloy is made in Russia at Alexander Aristov’s plants ChEMK and Kuznetsk Ferroalloys and at the Bratsk Ferroalloy Plant of Igor Zyuzin’s mining and metals group Mechel.

Izvestia writes that ChEMK and Kuznetsk Ferroalloys are suing the European Commission. ChEMK has confirmed that it has filed a lawsuit but refused to comment until the court makes a decision.

According to case materials available to Izvestia, ChEMK hopes the European Court of Justice will require a revocation of the import duties. ChEMK argues that the dumping price was set by the Bratsk Ferroalloy Plant. The parent company of the Bratsk plant, Mechel, is not contesting the EC decision.

Relations between Russia and the West soured over Ukraine. In late July, the EU and the United States moved from targeted sanctions against individuals and certain companies to restrictions against Russian oil and defense sectors and state-owned banks. In response, Russia introduced a year-long ban on food imports from these countries.
