MOSCOW, December 5 (RAPSI) – A court in Frankfurt has handed down a prison sentence to Kreshnik Berisha for fighting on the side of terrorists in Syria, Frankfurter Rundschau newspaper writes on Friday.
Berisha was sentenced to three years and nine months’ imprisonment. This is the first guilty sentence handed down to a German national since the Islamic State became the world’s biggest terrorist threat.
Berisha, 20, born to Kosovo parents near Frankfurt, was arrested upon his return at Frankfurt Airport in December after spending six months in Syria. In July 2013, he went to Syria, where he joined the terrorists’ fight against the government.
According to statistics provided to Die Welt newspaper by the German intelligence agency, at least 550 Germans have traveled to fight in Iraq and Syria.
