MOSCOW, December 11 (RAPSI) - A Russian national has been arrested in Bali on drug sale charges. According to Indonesian law, she could face capital punishment, RIA Novosti reports on Thursday citing an official spokesperson for Indonesian customs.
Alexandra Magnayeva, 26, was arrested at an airport in Bali where she arrived from Hong Kong with 2.1 kg of crystal meth hidden in two bags.
A customs official said that during an interview, Magnayeva said that her boyfriend with whom she lived in China asked her to deliver the drugs to someone in Bali.
The woman said she had been involved in drug trafficking across Asia, including several times in Thailand; however, it was her first time carrying the drugs to Bali.
New President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, announced earlier this week that there would be no mitigation of punishment for drug trafficking.
Indonesian laws are extremely strict about drug related crimes. In May 2010, a court of Denpasar sentenced a high-profile Australian trade union official to five months in prison for carrying only 1.7 g of marijuana. Those who try to import larger amounts could face dozens of years in prison or even death.
