MOSCOW, February 24 (RAPSI) – Moscow’s Butyrsky District Court on Tuesday extended until May 25 the detention of Sergey Gordeev, teenager who shot two people in his school and held his classmates hostage last winter, the victims’ attorney Igor Trunov told RAPSI.
The case is considered behind closed doors. The next hearing has been set for February 25.
On February 3, 2014, Sergey Gordeev, 15, made his way into his school with a rifle by threatening a guard who immediately called the police. Gordeev barged into a classroom where a geography teacher was giving a lesson and fatally shot him, holding about 20 students hostage, according to investigators.
He also allegedly shot a police officer who arrived on the scene and wounded another one.
Investigators reported that the suspect fired no less than 11 shots, wielding two carbines that were legally registered to his father. Gordeev was detained and officially charged with murder, intent to commit murder, and taking of hostages.
Gordeev pleaded partially guilty. A psychiatric evaluation has found Gordeev insane. Victims in the case of a teenager who killed two adults and held 20 students hostage in February 2014 have asked the court to withdraw psychiatric examination conclusions from the case materials as illegal, lacking substantiation and containing evidence of fraud. They have also requested that the court order an independent examination. The court dismissed the claim.
One of the students earlier told the LifeNews television network that the attacker was one of the best students in the class and was not involved in any conflicts at school, including with the murdered teacher. However, Kommersant newspaper said the student was angry at the teacher for preventing him from being awarded a gold medal for academic performance.
In accordance with the Russian Criminal Code, underage criminals face a maximum sentence of ten years in a juvenile correctional facility.
