MOSCOW, April 2 (RAPSI) – A Khanty-Mansi regional commercial court ordered twenty foreign insurance companies to pay Rosgosstrakh affiliate $16 million over the Superjet 100 aicraft crash in Indonesia in May 2012, RAPSI learnt in the court.
A lawsuit was filed in June 2013 by Kapital Strakhovaniye, a part of Russia's leading insurer Rosgosstrakh, against 24 foreign companies.
Kapital Strakhovaniye initially claimed $32.4 million in damages from the companies which provided insurance to 48 people on board. The sum was cut down to $16 million after it was partially paid out.
Among the defendants left on the list are Berkshire Hathaway International Insurance, Chartis Europe, Italy's Assicurazioni Generali, Spain's Mapfre Global Risks and Nepal's Oriental Insurance Company.
Sukhoi Civil Aircraft JSC that developed and built Superjet 100 aicraft filed a lawsuit against Kapital Strakhovaniye seeking $29.5 million in damages. Both parties reached an agreement in September 2013 under which the insurer pledged to pay $14.1 million to settle the dispute.
The plane crashed on its first ever demonstration tour, across six Asian countries, over Indonesia on May 9, 2012. All people on board the plane, including eight Russian nationals, were killed. The plane crashed into Mount Salak at an altitude of 1.6 km. The investigation found that the disaster was caused by human error.
