MOSCOW, June 6 (RAPSI) – The Moscow City Court has upheld the lawfulness of extended detention of a medical student standing charged with justifying terrorism, Timur Aliev, the defendant’s lawyer told RAPSI on Monday.
Patimat Gadzhieva is accused of public calls for support of terrorism and national strife; she is facing a prison term.
Earlier, the Moscow City Court has returned the case to the Prosecutor’s Office in order to clearly determine the appropriate jurisdiction. Initially, the case was to be reviewed by the Solntsevsky District Court of Moscow; however, the judge decided that it should be subject to a military court as a case over terrorism. Since the indictment had been signed by the District Prosecutor and due to the fact that it was submitted to a higher court, it should be signed by the City Prosecutor. After this technicality is resolved, the case will be reviewed by the Moscow District Military Court.
According to the lawyer, the student posted an image to a social network depicting representative of ISIS terror organization prohibited in Russia and “a scene of execution”. A copy of text in Russian was copied by Gadzhieva in the form of a prayer. She deleted the image after 13 days, but Russian authorities found the posting in Vkontakte’s archive and launched a criminal case against Gadzhieva in November 2015.
