MOSCOW, April 24 (RAPSI) – The Moscow Regional Court has ruled to review a criminal case against alleged leader of the notorious Pushkinsky gang Dmitry Zavyalov with the participation of a jury panel, the press-service of the court has told RAPSI.
During preliminary hearings, Zavyalov asked for his case to be reviewed by jurors. The selection procedure is set for May 10.
The alleged gang leader was placed on the federal wanted list in August 2009 and on the international wanted list in December 2009. He eventually settled in Spain where he was living on a forged Belgian passport. Zavyalov was arrested in May 2014 during a routine border check in La Jonquera, a municipality in Catalonia on the border with France. He was taken to a police station where his identity was established, along with an alert indicating that he was armed and dangerous.
In June and August 2014, the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office sent a request for Zavyalov’s extradition to Spain. Spanish authorities granted the request in April 2015.
According to the press-service of the Prosecutor General’s Office, Zavyalov supervised a gang that was active in Moscow and the Moscow Region, responsible for assaulting people, extorting money for “protection”, 19 murders, several attempted murders, causing grievous harm that resulted in deaths and other crimes.
Zavyalov is charged with organizing, leading and participation in a gang; murder committed by an organized criminal group; unlawful weapon trafficking; causing grievous harm to health; burglary; robbery; hooliganism and others.
