MOSCOW, May 3 (RAPSI) – Residents of Volokolamsk, a town located in the Moscow Region which has lately become notorious due to a garbage crisis, have filed seven lawsuits seeking 5.5 million rubles ($86,600) in compensation for moral damages, the plaintiffs’ lawyer Inna Yeliseyeva has stated.
Hearings over the lawsuits are scheduled for May 7, June 1 and June 6. All of them will be considered by the Volokolamsk City Court of the Moscow Region.
Eight residents of the town have filed lawsuits against Yadrovo company that manages a landfill of the same name. The plaintiffs demand to restitute their right to favorable environment and to transfer the landfill under the control of authorities. Moreover, they seek to stop collection and transportation of dangerous components.
In March, Yevgeny Gavrilov, ex-head of the Volokalamsk district, initiated emergency protocol and announced measures to liquidate the consequences of ecological violations during exploitation of the landfill. On March 19, Yadrovo company was fined 150,000 rubles ($2,300) by the Volokolamsk City Court.
