MOSCOW, May 10 (RAPSI) – A criminal case on attempted murder was opened on Thursday after a student started shooting in a transport college in Russia’s Novosibirsk Region, the Investigative Committee’s press service reported.

According to investigators, on Thursday morning, a 17-year old college student entered a classroom and shot at his course mate. Following that, the teenager shot himself and died at the scene. The victim was wounded and taken to a hospital.

Investigation is underway; medical, criminalistic, ballistic and other required examinations will be conducted, the statement reads.

Cases of attacks at schools became more frequent in 2018. In January, Russian schools suffered two attacks. On January 15, a student in the 10th grade and a former pupil of the same school in Perm intentionally caused multiple stab wounds to nine 4th graders and their teacher. The victims were hospitalized. The alleged attackers have been charged with attempted murder of more than two children collusively committed by a group of persons.

On January 19, a student of Buryatia's school entered the building and attacked pupils of the 7th grade; after that he set fire in a classroom with a bottle containing flammable liquid. Three children and a teacher were injured during the attack.

In April, a 17-year-old student entered an informatics class at his school in Sterlitamak, the second largest city in Russia’s Republic of Bashkortostan, and used a knife to cut a classmate’s hand and stab a teacher. Then he allegedly used a flammable liquid to set the school on fire which made one of the students to jump out of the window. Later, the alleged attacker stabbed himself. The fire did not result in any casualties. The suspect and the victims were transferred to a hospital.
