MOSCOW, January 13 (RAPSI) – Moscow’s Tverskoy District Court will consider a lawsuit of the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) against ‘undesirable organization’ label given to it in Russia on January 30, RAPSI reports from the courtroom on Monday.
Defendants in the case are Russia’s Prosecutor General’s Office and Justice Ministry.
On July 11, 2019, Russian prosecutors declared UWC an undesirable organization claiming that its activity poses threat to the foundations of the constitutional system and safety of the country. On July 17, the Justice Ministry added the NGO to the list of international undesirable organizations.
Following labeling of the organization as undesirable, banks are to stop its account maintenance. The NGO in turn must cease activities and distribution of information materials in Russia.
The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) is the largest public organization of Ukrainians residing in and outside Ukraine. It was founded in New York in 1967 under the name "The World Congress of Free Ukrainians".
