MOSCOW, December 11 (RAPSI) - Uruguay legalized the growth, sale, and consumption of marijuana in a landmark legislative move Tuesday, Reuters reported. The law will reportedly be implemented in 120 days, and registered users are expected to be able to purchase marijuana in licensed pharmacies next April.
Uruguayan residents who are 18 or older will be able to purchase up to 40 grams of marijuana each month from certain pharmacies, according to Reuters, though they will be required to register on a database to monitor the amount purchased. Furthermore, Uruguayans will reportedly be permitted to harvest six marijuana plants in their homes each year or create smoking clubs – which can grow up to 99 plants each year, between 15-45 members.
Uruguayan Senator and First Lady Lucia Topolansky told Reuters: "We begin a new experience in April. It involves a big cultural change that focuses on public health and the fight against drug trafficking."
According to the report, while other countries have decriminalized certain elements of marijuana use – such as possession – Uruguay is the first country to legalize the growth, sale, and consumption of marijuana.
