MOSCOW, June 15 (RAPSI) – The Federation Council, Russia’s Parliament upper house, had unanimously supported the reappointment of Yuri Chaika as the country’s Prosecutor General, RAPSI learnt in the Federation Council press-service on Wednesday.
Artur Muravyev, the plenipotentiary representative of the President in the upper house, Andrey Klishas, the Chairman of the Council’s Committee on Constitutional Legislation, and Viktor Ozerov, the Chairman of the Council’s Committee on Defense and Security, have introduced the nominee to the Parliament upper house.
Valentina Matviyenko, the Chairperson of the Federation Council, noted that as the Prosecutor General Chaika had proved himself as a professional, competent and hard-driving official, who could reform the Prosecutor General’s Office and maintain confidence on the part of the population. At present, according to Matviyenko, the Prosecutor General’s Office tightly controls compliance with laws and observance of human rights and liberties.
In the course of the meeting Chaika took the oath of Russia’s Prosecutor General. He has held this office since 2006.
