MOSCOW, August 27 (RAPSI) – Russia’s government has submitted to the State Duma a bill streamlining the procedure of obtaining Russian citizenship for members of the state program on resettlement of compatriots living abroad, a statement published on the website of the Presidential Council for Human Rights reads.
Under the bill, foreign compatriots should only register with the migration authorities, while earlier they had to have residency registration in Russia.
A rule on residency registration for receiving Russian citizenship forced people to buy forged documents, according to the human rights advocates.
The bill gives the Russian President a power to determine from the humanitarian viewpoint benefit-entitled foreigners or persons without citizenship, who could be granted a right to obtain Russian citizenship under a simplified procedure.
