MOSCOW, February 14 (RAPSI) - Chairman of Russia’s Council for Human Rights Mikhail Fedotov has appealed to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet over Ukraine’s refusal to register Russian observers at Ukrainian presidential elections, the advisory body’s press service reports Thursday.
Earlier, Ukrainian authorities sent a notice of registration denial to Russian observers to the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights.
According to Fedotov, this unprecedented move is a gross breach of international election process standards binding on all UN member states.
Moreover, the rights of more than 2.5 million Ukrainian citizens currently locating in Russia to vote in the elections are being violated as Verkhovna Rada has taken a decision not to open voting stations in the territory of the Russian Federation.
The Chairman of Russia’s Council for Human Rights has expressed hope that the United Nations Human Rights Council will discuss these problems and reach a favorable decision during its regular 40th session on February 25.
