MOSCOW, August 18 - RAPSI, Igor Petrushov. The Basmanny District court in Moscow ordered release from custody of a former prosecutor charged with receiving bribes from an illegal casino ring, the Russian Legal Information Agency (RAPSI) reports from the courtroom.

The suspect, former Moscow Region prosecutor Dmitry Urumov, has been placed under house arrest.

Earlier the court ordered Urumov to be held in jail, deciding that he was a flight risk. However, after Urumov entered into a plea bargain and testified against his co-defendants, the Investigative Committee requested more lenient restrictive measures.

Uncovered several months ago, the high-profile Moscow Region illegal casino scandal incited a major public uproar. Businessman Ivan Nazarov allegedly operated illegal casinos in 15 towns across Moscow Region. According to law enforcement authorities, several high-ranking officials of prosecutor’s offices and the federal Interior Ministry were involved in the casino operation, which generated between $5 million and $10 million in revenue monthly.
Investigators have thus far arrested nine law enforcement officials in the matter.
