ST. PETERSBURG, May 15 (RAPSI) - International law as a whole needs to be revised, Chairman of Russia's Constitutional Court Valery Zorkin said on Wednesday at the St. Petersburg International Legal Forum (SPILF).
Zorkin explained that there legal grey areas inevitably leads to collision.
Zorkin noted the deep crisis facing international law and stressed that powerful states and coalitions of states tend to make decisions that usurp the functions of the UN and the UN Security Council.
"I would say the events in Libya, Syria and Egypt, as well as the expropriation of bank deposits in Cyprus, are more than simple elements of a new era of global turbulence," Zorkin said.
"We see that more and more authorities and state coalitions are trying to appropriate the right to international lawmaking and law enforcement, which is tantamount to infringing on the contractual nature of lawmaking," he said, adding that, "in fact, this amounts to replacing legal methods of resolving problems with the use of force."
SPILF bills itself as the largest legal event in Russia, Eastern Europe, and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region. In gathering many of the best and brightest legal minds around the globe, it aims to establish itself as a “permanent platform for the highest level of discussion for politicians, lawyers, businessmen, and scholars.”
