MOSCOW, May 21 (RAPSI) - First Deputy Head of the Federal Migration Service Yekaterina Yegorova urged caution in granting dual Russian citizenship during a parliamentary hearing on Tuesday.
She asserted that in the event of dual or multiple citizenship, problems can arise in international relations, including in cases of extradition when it is difficult to determine if the country is extraditing its own national or a foreigner.
"This also creates problems for third countries which have to decide the citizenship of the person they are dealing with," Yegorova said.
She stressed that people holding several passports may encounter problems with appointments to civil positions, fulfilling military obligations, taxation, and diplomatic protection.
Yegorova stressed that some countries, in particular Germany, Austria, and Ukraine, do not grant dual citizenship, and that most post-Soviet countries do not recognize dual citizenship.
The discussion arose after famous French actor Gerard Depardieu received fast-tracked Russian citizenship in January, and collected his new passport at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Many social media users claimed that such expedited procedure is not widely available for ordinary people seeking legal status as a Russian citizen.
