MOSCOW, June 19 (RAPSI) - Four participants of an unauthorized protest at the Japanese Embassy in Moscow have been arrested for public disorder on Wednesday, press officers of the Interior Ministry's Moscow Chief Directorate told RIA Novosti.

A source in the police reported that the detainees are active members of the non-registered party Another Russia, who staged an unauthorized rally and scattered leaflets. The protest reportedly concerned a territorial dispute between Russia and Japan.

Japan claims sovereignty of the four Kuril Islands, Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan and Habomai, referring to the bilateral Treaty of Commerce and Navigation (1855). Tokio said the handing over of the islands was a condition for a peace agreement to be signed with the Soviet Union which was not, however, ultimately signed at the end of World War II.

Moscow claims that the Southern Kuril Islands were transferred into the ownership of the Soviet Union following WWII and Russia's sovereignty over the territory, which was acknowledged internationally, is undisputable.
