MOSCOW, August 1 (RIA Novosti) - Over 1,000 illegal Vietnamese migrants have been detained in a large-scale police operation in the Russian capital, the Interior Ministry’s Moscow department has said in a statement.
“Today police officers detained 1,200 citizens of Vietnam who stayed in Russia illegally at a storage site in the city’s east,” the department said in a statement Wednesday.
The ministry added that 20 textile production shops designed for over 800 workplaces were discovered at the same site.
The operation also resulted in eight suspected organizers of the illegal workplaces, from Iraq, Syria, Vietnam and Azerbaijan, being detained. Four suspects are reportedly Russian nationals.
The operation involved over 900 police officers.
Moscow police recently launched a series of raids on the city’s marketplaces to “decriminalize them” in the wake of an attack on a police officer who was seriously injured at a market when attacked by an angry mob on Saturday.
